INCORPORATING COGNITIVE SCIENCE IN ONLINE TEACHING:  As classroom teachers, we know what makes Powerful Teaching: retrieval practice, brain dumps, metacognition, feedback, etc., but what does this look like in the online classroom? Join Patrice Bain, co-author of Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning (2019) as she explains how to use those same techniques in the virtual classroom.  Patrice facilitates workshops and webinars around the world, has been featured on PBS and NPR, and recently retired from 25 years of teaching.

ADDRESSING OUT STUDENTS' SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL NEEDS WHEN TEACHING ONLINE:  For most teachers, accommodating the Social-Emotional needs of our students is second nature.  However, as we're suddenly moving to online instruction, it's easy to forget the human side of our students as we're busy navigating the technology of moving classes online.  Join Dr. Matt Dewar as he talks about ways to reach each of our students, even through our computers.  Matt Dewar, Ed.D., is an experienced educator, speaker, consultant, and author who specializes in bringing research-based mindfulness and self-care protocols to students, athletes, coaches, and educators looking to manage stress, improve performance, and increase well-being. He is currently the well-being coordinator at Lake Forest (IL) High School.

TRAUMA-INFORMED LEADERSHIP IN THE TIME OF A PANDEMIC:  As leaders, we are responsible for seeing our staff and students through to the other side.  Learn how to navigate the new unknowns, including Anticipatory Panic, how people function in uncertainty (and how you can respond!), adapting to chronic (and big!) changes, and how to come together as a community to deal with loss. Lisa is a certified Thanatologist, trained counselor and communication expert with over 18 years of professional experience training, consulting, coaching and speaking on effective messaging and situational management for traumatic or unexpected loss, workplace bullying and sexual harassment, difficult conversations and unintended outcomes, chronic conflict and performance development within high-intensity front-line occupations and business environments.  And yes, she will tell you that teaching is one of those high-stress occupations. ​

A CANDID CONVERSATION TO HELP EDUCATORS WITH EQUITABLE TEACHING PRACTICES DURING COVID-19:  Kiera Vargas and Charles Carter will start a conversation centering on what they see with moving classes (or an entire school!) online and ensuring that all of his educators understand best practices to help foster inclusiveness.  They will discuss the importance of ensuring teachers within the schoolhouse are receiving guidance from their administrators to assist with effective online pedagogy, which looks different than traditional methods.  They will pose scenarios, provide strategies, and make themselves available for questions to help administrators understand that equal learning is subjective at this time.  Kiera Vargas, JD, MLIS, MS has taught K-12 and currently instructs at Tennessee State University.  Charles Carter, MS has been in education for 19 years, and currently serves as Assistant Principal at Page HS in Greensboro, NC.​

ENGAGING LEARNERS IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT: Keeping students engaged in online instruction is VERY challenging.  Join author, speaker, YouTuber, and 6th grade teacher Michael Matera for some engagement tips and tools that work.  Michael is the author of Explore Like a Pirate, creator of the #XLAP community on Twitter and the annual online HiveSummit, a national speaker, and a full time 6th grade teacher who is navigating full time online teaching for the first time.  He will share what he knows about gamification, engagement, as well as some tools he has found that is working well for him right now.
